Lockstitch Machines

A lock stitch is a fundamental stitch on any sewing machine – when the machine makes single stitches, the top and bottom threads “lock” together, keeping them secure in the fabric.

Chainstitch Machines

Chainstitch is created using a looper instead of a bobbin so you can sew for longer without the need to stop. By its nature, it has more elasticity to the stitch making it very suitable for sewing areas that can benefit from this attribute. Serging, coverstitching and waistbands are just a few of the traditional uses for this stitch type.

Drop Feed

A drop feed type sewing machine is the most common feeding type of all lockstitch machines. When the needle penetrates the material the feed dog "feeds" the material from underneath. For light to medium weight material this is a very efficient system and allows the machine to reach very high speeds of up to 5,000 rpm.

Needle Feed

For material that is slippery or that is prone to puckering (what happens when the feeding is uneven), a needle feed feeding system is very useful. Unlike the drop feed that relies on the feed dog to move the fabric, the needle feed has the added help of the needle moving as well. In many cases this provides enough additional contact with the fabric to allow sewing on more challenging fabric. It can also be useful when the material has enough added thickness to make it a better choice than a drop feed.

Walking Foot

A walking foot machine is recommended for sewing medium to heavy weight material. The simplest walking foot machine is also known as the unison feed machine. In this type, the outside foot walks, but the needle, like a drop feed machine goes up and down only. For additional feeding ability, the compound feed walking foot machine is recommended. In this case, the inside foot as well as the needle walks, providing the ultimate feeding capability.

Direct Drive

The newest technology in the sewing industry is the replacement of the conventional "under the machine" type motor with a motor that is directly connected to the machines shaft. The advantages are a smoother, quieter operation, the elimination of the motor belt and faster set-up.

ZIG-ZAG

A zig zag stitch is a common stitch type when you require additional strength in a stitch. It's used in the production of undergarments, applique work as well as a decorative stitch.

Blindstitch

Blind hemming is used when you need to secure a seam but you do not want the outside stitch to show. This is used for the hemming of pants, skirts and dresses. The blindstitch machine's penetration dial allows the user to adjust how deep the needle will go to ensure the stitch doesn't show on the outside of the fabric. The skip stitch feature enables the machine to skip every other stitch, which is useful for fine, delicate fabrics.

Coverstitch

Coverstitch machines are widely used for all kinds of active wear sewing, whether it’s coverseaming, hemming, or collarette binding. They’re made in both flatbed and cylinder versions depending on the type of sewing you’re doing and your budget.

Serger/Overlock

The serger (alternatively known as an overlock) is used to cover the edge of a ply of material to prevent it from fraying or it's used to sew two ply's of material together. Unlike their household equivalents, industrial serging machines can operate at very high speeds so they are very efficient. Sergers come in a variety of configurations; the most common being the two needle, three and four thread mock safety stitch and the five thread true safety stitch.

Flat/Cylinder Bed

When you require a larger sewing area, we recommend a long arm type machine that will provide the clearance to sew larger projects.

A cylinder bed machine is ideal for any sewing application that requires circular sewing, whether that be a walking foot type machine or a coverstitch type machine.

Button/Drapery Tacker

A button sewing machine is the fastest way to attach a button to a garment. You can adjust from a 2 or a 4 hole button with a dial as well as the maximum number of stitches. Reliable modifies a standard button sewing machine to use as a drapery tacker with the ability to tack up to a 3/4" pleat.
